Brody's Story

For years, I begged my parents for a little brother. When I was sixteen, I brought home a chocolate Lab puppy without their permission. It did not go over well at first, but I knew he would win them over eventually. No one stood a chance against those baby blue eyes. My brother, Emmet, started calling him “little bro,” which eventually became Brody. And it stuck, because he truly became the little brother I had always wanted.

As a naive high schooler, I did not fully understand what it meant to care for a dog, but my parents stepped in to help. When I left for college, they took over completely. Every time I came home during winter breaks in the mountains or summers at the bay, Brody and I picked up right where we left off. He was the classic Labrador. Joyful, loyal, and hopelessly ball obsessed.

After college, my now wife, Tessa, and I moved into a small apartment and brought Brody with us. He came to work with me every day, becoming the unofficial company mascot and the warehouse crew’s favorite shadow. Even the UPS driver greeted him like a coworker. Brody had a way of making himself known wherever he went.

Outside of work, the three of us spent our weekends hiking, going to the dog beach, or any activity with water or his ball. Brody loved being out in nature, ears bouncing, tail wagging, always checking to make sure we were right behind him. Those adventures became our early version of family time, and they remain some of our favorite memories.

Brody was not just good with people. He was gentle with every animal he met. When we lived in the apartment, we also had a bird and a bunny. We had no idea how Brody would react, but he adored them. Every day when we got home from work, he would run into their room and check on them. His softness was not trained. It was simply who he was. Curious, patient, and endlessly kind.

Shortly after Brody turned six, we made a big move to Utah to start a nonprofit equine rescue and sanctuary called Project Barnyard. Within a year, he went from an only child of a suburban family to a young couple's pride and joy in a small apartment to an oldest of three on a ranch dog. No matter the situation, he took it in stride and was a constant rock for his humans. Link to: “Meet the Founder” page

Brody thrived on the ranch. He befriended horses, donkeys, mules, and alpacas. He interacted with any creature that would entertain him. When a rescue was sick or injured, Brody slowed down. He would sit quietly beside us on the toughest days, grounding us with his calm presence. He was not just a dog on the ranch. He was part of the emotional infrastructure that held the place together.

A few months after moving, he began having trouble keeping food down. At first we shrugged it off. Maybe it was the heat or playing too hard. Then came the emergency vet visits, medications, diet changes, and more uncertainty. Eventually, we scheduled a Barium series to check for a blockage. When the X rays showed no intestinal movement, the veterinary team suspected he had swallowed something and recommended immediate exploratory surgery. Since he could no longer eat or drink, we agreed.

Hours later, we received the call. There was no blockage. Instead, they found a large, aggressive tumor with cancer already spreading. There was nothing anyone could do. Brody passed away at just seven years old. His life was cut far too short

After losing him, we were left with questions we wished we had known to ask earlier. Not because someone failed us, but because like so many pet parents, we acted out of love without always understanding what long term health really required. When he struggled, we reached for anything that might help in the moment. We didn’t fully question ingredients, additives, supplements, or quick fixes. We didn’t think critically about how everything we used worked together or whether our choices were truly supporting his long term wellness.

Looking back, we realized how reactive we had become. We were trying to solve symptoms without understanding the bigger picture. Those questions lingered, not because they could change Brody’s story, but because they could shape how we care for every animal after him.

We built this company to give families access to clean, holistic, transparent solutions that support preventative care and long term wellness. Brody reshaped how we think about our responsibility as animal owners, what we demand from the products we use, and how deeply we value the health of the animals we love.

Brody’s story is our why.

Through The Brody Co, we hope your four legged family members live their longest and healthiest lives.
